I've always known and recognised John Boyne as the author of "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" - we were literally studying this book for English Literature at school, so it was a bit difficult not to make that connection. I'm sure you can imagine my surprise as I casually strolled into the Book Festival at Ta' Qali, and saw that this very same author wrote a book about the LGBT community! The title - "My Brother's Name is Jessica" - immediately peaked my curiosity and I almost instantaneously picked it up and started reading. It is narrated from the perspective of Sam as he watches this older sibling transition into a female.
I think the narration is a large factor that really pulled me in. I felt as though I was a fly on the wall, witnessing the events taking place within this family. I love reading books with peculiar family dynamics. I'd also never really read a book about the LGBT community before, so I think this was a great place to start because I truly enjoyed reading this! I'd highly recommend it.
Sincerely,
Ann ❤️
